Natural Healing

For many years I have been fascinated by the folklore and the facts surrounding the world of natural plant remedies. The wonder of mother nature is that we are miraculously provided with the ingredients required to create remedies for the treatment of many illnesses and injuries. Our hedgerows are full of plants that have been valued for centuries for their natural healing qualities, but over the years we have lost touch with their properties and uses.

In 2008 I commenced work on a portfolio of images to showcase the world of natural remedies and as part of that, created a new range of greetings cards called Natural Healing, to illustrate flowers and plants with a strong history of medicinal use.

The Peak District National Park

Photographing the Peak District National Park will no doubt be a life long project for me, given my proximity to this spectacular location. It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to visit different places in the National Park and to capture aspects of its natural beauty. My Peak District National Park project is on-going and I am continually adding to my image collection.

Bonaire and Curacao

The islands of Bonaire and Curacao are located about 50 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, in the Dutch Antilles. They are alive with colour and natural history and my visits there in 2001 and 2003 led to a photo project to capture the vibrancy and diversity of these islands, which have a very different flavour to many other Caribbean islands.

Both islands have vast national parks, with a wide variety of flora and fauna, giving photographic opportunities not found elsewhere. Bonaire in particular is the home to a remarkable society of Iguana, plus a prolific range of bird life, including the Caribbean Parakeet and the Flamingo.

The Underwater World

As well as being a photographer, I am also a diver and it is an altogether different sort of challenge to take a beautiful image underwater. For one thing, you've got so much more to think about, least of all keeping safe in an environment that is so breathtakingly beautiful, but which can so quickly turn into a place of grave danger if not treated with respect.

It is an awesome experience to be underwater, sharing the world with tropical fish and sea life, but photography can be very much a game of chance, as the marine inhabitants move around their vast home quite without regard to the image requests of picture editors. It is another privilege none the less and this is a project that I hope to expand on in future years.
